This
is not your mother's musical! Recently awarded "Best local theatre
production in Columbia" by Free Times readers, The Full Monty is
about six laid-off steel workers whose desperate plan to get their lives back
together requires them to triumph over their fears, their nerves, and ultimately...their
clothes. Based on the 1997 Oscar-nominated British film, The Full Monty's Broadway
debut earned 10 Tony Award nominations and now Piccolo Spoleto presents
Workshop Theatre of Columbia's production of this utterly contemporary
musical by rock musician David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) and 4-time Tony
Winning playwright Terrence McNally about real men in a really tough jam revitalizing
their lives with their real bodies. Directed by Greg Leevy. Adult
language and brief nudity.
Spoleto
Festival USA in Charleston,
SC is about as
good as any arts festival in the U.S.
gets. Now entering its 20th year as the American companion to a namesake festival
in Italy, Spoleto features17 days of dance, theater, musical theater, chamber
music, symphonic music, jazz, choirs and the visual arts. Venues range from the
outdoor gardens and an island to Charleston's historic churches and theaters.
Each year, the festival hosts over 100 performances by international artists in
a variety of disciplines. Since its inception, it has presented 100 international
premieres and 93 American premieres. The combination of historic Charleston's
old European charm and the world-class Spoleto Festival USA together
produce a unique and impacting synergy for all who come to the city by the sea
to experience this magnificent international multi arts festival. Spoleto
Festival USA claims an audience of between 70,000 and 80,000 each year.
But what really adds the ingredient of magic to the mix is Piccolo Spoleto,
which provides access to the festival for Every Person, especially children. Focusing
primarily on artists of the Southeast region, Piccolo Spoleto
is the perfect complement to the international scope of its parent festival and
its 700 events in 17 days, transforms Charleston into an exhilarating
celebration of performing, literary and visual arts. Piccolo Spoleto's traditional
program offerings include visual arts exhibits, classical music, jazz, dance,
theatre, poetry readings, children's activities, choral music, ethnic cultural
presentations, crafts, and film. Piccolo's mission is to provide access to the
Spoleto Festival experience for everyone, regardless of their economic, social
or physical circumstances and to provide the opportunity for excellent local and
regional artists, writers and performances to be presented in Piccolo's "local
venue." Piccolo Spoleto offers something wonderful for everyone - from classical
to contemporary, from traditional to cutting edge. One of the
unique aspects of Piccolo Spoleto is the accessibility to the Spoleto Festival
experience. The Piccolo Spoleto Festival is produced and
directed by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs and is funded in
part by grants from the City of Charleston; Charleston County; South Carolina
Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and
the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
