NATIVE
HARVEST" at the HAGOOD MILL A Celebration of Southeastern Indian Culture
The
Pickens County Cultural Commission invites you to join the friends of the
Pickens County Museum for a special, and free, day of folklife, traditional
arts and Native American culture at the Historic Hagood Mill. The Mill will
be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 a.m. until
4:00 p.m. This 1845 gristmill, with its' 20 ft. overshot wooden waterwheel,
is one of the oldest mills still producing grain products in S.C. At
12:30, in the visitor's building, Pickens County Museum curator, Ed Bolt,
will present an overview of the Native American time periods and artifacts.
At 1:00, Will Moreau will give a performance of Native American stories and song.
Moreau has performed at the John. F.Kennedy Center in Washington, DC,
the Ty Llen Cultural Center in Wales and at the Lincoln Center for Performing
Arts in New York. He appears at the mill courtesy of the South Carolina Humanities
Council Speakers Bureau. Appearing with Will Moreau from 12:00 until 4:00 will
be Gray-Eyes Jones and his Native American drumming group, "Southern Comfort,"
doing traditional Native American drumming and dance. Gray-Eyes, family and friends
will give an informative and interesting program of drumming and appropriate dances
for both men and women. They will also include an "intertribal" dance in which
they will invite visitor participation. Southern Comfort will bring some of their
award winning traditional crafts for display and sale. Miller and Cultural Commission
member, Alan Warner, will be conducting tours, answering questions and giving
corn-grinding demonstrations throughout the day. Fresh stone-ground corn meal
and grits will be available, as well as wheat flour and our Hagood Mill cookbooks.
Our regular monthly folklife demonstrations include traditional blacksmithing,
flintknapping, moonshining, spinning, quilting, woodcarving... and more.
So, come out, grab a hot dog and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for
the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining us for this, our monthly 3rd
Saturday event. There will be a bake sale in the old log cabin. See the way our
pioneer ancestors had to do things. Walk the three-quarter mile "old mill race"
nature trail and check out our 1700's Cherokee home-site, still under construction,
but already pretty impressive. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the
third Saturday of every month. It is located just 3 miles north of Pickens off
Hwy. 178 on Hagood Mill Rd. For additional information please contact the Pickens
County Museum at by e-mail at picmus@co.pickens.sc.us
